At A&M we are determined to be the best in our field, with over 20 years experience in the investigation of structures and structural elements, we have refined the approach to a ‘one-stop shop’ for most eventualities. We do not profess to know it all!!, but we have probably worked with people who do! It is more a case of being able to network the skills available in the market, that has given us a commercial advantage, which we feel we can pass on to our clients.

Bersch-Rolt design and install masonry reinforcement systems for the repair and strengthening of damaged houses and masonry arch bridges. Stainless Steel reinforcement is installed in the brickwork, by cutting away bed joint mortar or drilling holes below the surface, and bonding stainless steel bars with fixed locating spacers in place special mortars. The principle of the design is that the bars are positioned so that they work in tension and combine with the masonry to form beams in the outer, and also if required the inner, leaves of external walls. This method of strengthening damaged structures offers savings in costs, disruption to traffic or tenants, and fixed priced contracts for accurate financial planning.

Concrete Engineering (previously Concrete Engineering International) is a quarterly magazine from Palladian Publications Ltd, publishers of World Cement, World Coal, Hydrocarbon Engineering, and World Pipelines.

The magazine publishes a wide range of technical articles which deal with every aspect of concrete design, construction, maintenance and repair. The new format introduced in this year’s Spring issue does not detract from the quality and importance of the articles and reviews that have been specially commissioned from many of the industry’s leading experts and authorities. Typical recent topics covered include: bridges, flyovers, viaducts and footbridges; concrete in hostile environments;

formwork; admixtures; concrete roads and paving; concrete repairs, cathodic protection, and high rise construction. Coming issues will consider concrete above and below ground, fixings, joints and sealants, pumping techniques, ready mixed concrete and much, much more.

Concrete Engineering is best summed up in the words of one of its most avid readers, a Director in a firm of Consulting Engineers, "Concrete Engineering has added a new dimension to the technical journals available. The mix of new build techniques and methods of dealing with maintenance and repair sits well together"

Corrosion of embedded steel, through the action of de-icing salts, airborne sea salts and salts cast into the concrete at the construction stage, is arguably the most serious cause of deterioration of reinforced concrete structures. Cathodic protection (CP) is becoming well established and increasingly accepted as the practical long-term solution to the problem. The Corrosion Prevention Association (CPA) was set up in 1993 to increase the awareness of CP as a means of monitoring and rehabilitating chloride induced corrosion in reinforced concrete. The Association represents the leading consultants, contractors and material suppliers engaged in cathodic protection projects and other electrochemical remediation techniques. The CPA’s Monographs on various aspects of the subject will be available free of charge.

The advantages over conventional strain gauges are embeddability, massively reduced cabling, multiplexing, intrinsic safety, and immunity to RFI and many other environmental factors. Applications for structural health monitoring and materials testing are currently across a wide range of industries including, civil engineering, maritime, aerospace and power generation. A range of techniques have been used to embed and surface mount the optical fibre to concrete, composite and metal structures. Smart fibres offers the following: engineering consultancy on-site and in-house; array installation, with monitoring and data analysis supplied at appropriate intervals; sensor array and opto-eletronic hardware manufacture and installation. Smart Fibres also enters into joint projects with key players in industries to develop applications.
